Jaime Munguia’s journey towards a middleweight world title fight continues with a trip to Texas.
Golden Boy Promotions announced that Munguia will take on former title challenger Maciej Sulecki on April 24 in a 12-round middleweight bout. The fight will take place at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas and streamed on DAZN globally except in Mexico. The stream is scheduled to start around 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT.
This will be Munguia’s third fight at middleweight after a run as the WBO junior middleweight champion from May 2018 to late 2019. Munguia first won the title when he came on as a replacement opponent and stopped Sadam Ali. Munguia’s title reign saw him pick up victories against the likes of Liam Smith, Takeshi Inoue and Dennis Hogan. After he moved up in weight, Munguia went on to beat former contenders Gary O’Sullivan and Tureano Johnson.
A win over Sulecki puts the Mexican slugger one step closer towards a potential title shot.
“There is no more exciting a middleweight in the world today than Jaime Munguia, and every time he fights, he brings huge knockout power into the ring. Sulecki is a tough customer who gave Danny Jacobs all he can handle, but if Munguia can pass this test, a world championship fight is right around the corner,” Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya said in a press release.
Sulecki previously challenged for Demetrius Andrade’s WBO middleweight title back in June 2019, but was thoroughly outboxed and suffered a shutout defeat on the scorecards. Since then, Sulecki fought just once, which was a 10-round decision win over Sasha Yengoyan back in August 2020. Sulecki has also faced the likes of Daniel Jacobs, Jack Culcay and Hugo Centeno Jr., beating Culcay and Centeno.
