Fresh off a career-altering win late last year, Carlos Gongora returns to a DAZN card in Florida.
The unbeaten Gongora will fight Christopher Pearson on the April 17 Matchroom Boxing event, to be streamed on DAZN. The card, taking place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, will be headlined by Demetrius Andrade’s WBO middleweight title defense against Liam Williams.
Gongora is coming off a 12th-round knockout victory over previously-unbeaten fighter Ali Akhmedov last December. Gongora came into the fight as a late replacement and was a betting underdog with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn calling the win over Akhmedov “one of the most dramatic” that he’s seen. Weeks after the fight, Matchroom signed Gongora to a promotional deal.
“Carlos pulled off a brilliant win in Florida in December, and now is the time for him to build himself into a massive threat in the 168 lbs division. Christopher is no stranger to upsetting the odds as he proved against Falcao, and he’ll look to do something similar again in Florida,” Hearn said.
Pearson has spent the majority of his career fighting at middleweight, but has not fought since May 2019. Pearson is coming off a victory over Yamaguchi Falcao in his last time out in the ring, but will be the dealing with the longest layoff between fights as a pro.
Several more fights were also announced for the Andrade vs. Williams undercard, including a number of unbeaten prospects. Heavyweight prospect Mahammadrasul Majidov will take on his most experienced opponent when he takes on Andrey Fedosov. This will be Fedosov’s first fight since 2018. In addition, Otha Jones III will return to DAZN for his first fight of 2021 and take on Jorge Castaneda and Arthur Biyarslanov will face Israel Mercado in a battle of unbeaten prospects.
Lastly, Alexis Espino and Aaron Aponte will see action in separate fights. Matchroom stated that opponents for both Espino and Aponte will be announced at a later date.
