Original Date Of Article: October 20

Many had expected Vasiliy Lomachenko’s superfight against Teofimo Lopez to be one of boxing’s most-watched fights and the broadcast delivered the sport’s best ratings of 2020.

According to numbers released by Showbuzz Daily, the entire seven-fight card for the October 17 Top Rank on ESPN event averaged 1.534 million viewers and drew a 0.48 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Both of those numbers are the best for a boxing broadcast in 2020. The viewership for the broadcast also narrowly beat out the February 15 PBC on FOX card headlined by Caleb Plant vs. Vincent Feigenbutz, which averaged 1.528 million viewers.

The entire Top Rank broadcast also drew 626,000 viewers in the 18-49 demographic and drew a 0.84 household rating.

As for the main event itself, Lomachenko vs. Lopez peaked at 2.898 million viewers and never went under 2.3 million viewers. The main event drew far better viewership than Lomachenko’s last fight on ESPN, which was a 12-round decision against Jose Pedraza in 2018. That fight averaged 2.013 million viewers.

The card was also shown on ESPN+, meaning viewership numbers on ESPN likely would have been higher had the card been shown only on ESPN. The broadcast was also going up against the Alabama vs. Georgia football game on CBS and game seven of MLB’s ALCS on TBS. MLB averaged 4.502 million viewers and Alabama vs. Georgia averaged 9.611 million viewers.

The ratings for Lomachenko’s latest fight are the among the best Top Rank has ever drawn on ESPN, impressive given the competition the bulk of the main broadcast had to deal with plus the changing television landscape in the COVID-19 era.
